Life in the Elevators
A Novel
By D. DeWitt Johnston

Chapter One

My story begins as a young man in Texas in 1967 when I was attending Trinity University in San Antonio. After finishing my first year, I dropped out, tuned-in, and turned on. The true story that I am about to tell you really took place. It was during a time of great social upheaval in America. Protest and unrest was growing through all shades of the human spectrum. I became the drummer in a rock n' roll band named The 13th Floor Elevators.
I, like many young people, left home and followed the road to adventure. The conversations I have about my experiences during that decade of social change have been many and varied except for the problem that I have remembering. I have forgotten more of the things that happened than I can remember. My faded memory leaves me with but sketchy impressions of time past and therefor, it will require a great deal of effort on my part to flowingly muse as I attempt to tell you the story which I am about to tell. It will be well worth the effort because I think that you will find a greater insight into my generation that they called the Hippies. With a better understanding of us, maybe you will understand yourself better. I will help you to see the experience through the eyes of the musicians in the band so that you may understand the ideas that motivated and inspired them.
